“Pictures of Magazines 2”: Surreal Photo Collages by Vik Muniz.
Vik Muniz is a contemporary artist from São Paulo, Brazil, and he currently residing in New York City. His solo and group masterpieces have been exhibited all across the globe, and he has received numerous awards.
Pictures of Magazine 2 by Vik Muniz is beautiful new series that is currently on display at the galerie Sikkema Jenkins & Co. This Brooklyn-based artist has reproduced nine famous paintings by Van Gogh, Manet and more from ripped pieces from popular magazines spreads.
With this series, Pictures of Magazines 2, Muniz re-creates icons from the history of representation using images and text literally torn from books and magazines and from sources both high and low.
Vik Muniz was the subject of the Academy Award nominated documentary film Waste Land (2010) which followed his work with a group of catadores – pickers of recyclable materials – in Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest garbage dump located outside Rio de Janeiro. In recognition of his contributions to education and social development including his work with the catadores, he was recently named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
