Artist Paula Strawn Transforms Babies’ Head-Shaping Helmets Into Impressive Works Of Art.
Artist Paula Strawn has turned her paintbrush and talent to an unexpected but charming art form – baby helmets. Her decorative paint jobs turn these medical devices into playful accessories.
Flat-head syndrome is a common condition in which infants’ heads appear flat. It’s treatable, and now, thanks to Strawn, can be fashionable!
It started out as a favor for a friend, Kathy, whose granddaughter wore a corrective helmet. “Kathy said ‘please paint this ugly thing!’ and I did,” Strawn explained to The Huffington Post in an email. When the baby’s doctor saw Strawn’s creation, he urged her to put business cards and fliers in his office.
Now, 12 years later, Strawn runs Lazardo Art, painting helmets for babies across the United States based on parents’ requests. She has lost count of how many she’s made, but believes it’s somewhere above 1,300.
“I TRULY BELIEVE that a fun and friendly design on these very useful yet unattractive helmets is an attitude changer for all who come in contact with baby. plus, who am i kidding? i have a blast painting them.
BELOW ARE CONVENIENT FOLDERS with all the photos of my helmets and some of my art. why the discrepancy? 99% of the time i remember to take photos of the helmets. art work? seems to fly out of the house without a photo or a brain cell firing. it’s an enigma.
I CHARGE $30 AN HOUR. price depends on the time it takes to paint your design. i am happy to help all i can to keep you in budget. the average seems to be 4-7 hours ($120-$210) but plenty of cute things have been painted under 4 hours and there are huge heaps of things that have taken over 8! you can choose something i have painted or something completely brand new to me…i do love a new design and can paint just about anything.
WHEN CAN WE PAINT? many helmet providers these days like you to get it painted pronto before it is on baby’s head 23/7, some like you to wait a few hours or a few days, some like you to wait until after the first adjustment. i would suggest asking your helmet provider what they recommend.
SHIPPING! you ship overnight, i paint like the wind and if i can get your design painted by 3ish, i can ship back out same day. 2 days off baby. if i can’t get your design painted by 3ish, i ship out next day. 3 days off baby. helmets have always arrived safely, helmets have always returned home safely and no baby’s cranial progress has been effected.”
