Montserrat – an island in the Caribbean Sea, located in the Leeward Islands, which are part of the chain of the Lesser Antilles. It is a British overseas territory. The island was partly destroyed when, in July 1995 woke Soufriere Hills Volcano, doused with mud city of Plymouth, the level of which in different places was more than 12 meters. Two-thirds of the island’s population were forced to flee. In the late 1990s the volcano continued to erupt on a regular basis, including the eruption of June 25, 1997, which killed 19 people. The most recent period of increased activity of the volcano occurred in the period from November 2009 to February 2010, when the volcano spewed fresh pyroclastic flows and ash column on more than 6,000 m high. Since 2010, the volcano has been relatively quiet, but the city is still buried in the mud.
