Every two years in Brussels in August, the central square of the Grand Place is covered with flower carpet. The carpet is short, only 4-5 days and decorates the main city square in front of city hall.

In 1971 he decided to put carpet on the central square of Brussels, to show the beauty of begonias and, at the same time, to draw attention to them. The carpet was called «Ornemental Arabesques» («Decorative Arabesque”). Next carpet – «Parks and Gardens» («Parks and Gardens”) – arranged in the Belgian capital after three years, in 1976. Then there were 1979, 1980, 1986, and then the holiday has become a regularly held every two years in even years (1988, 1990, etc.).

The carpet is made of cut flowers begonias. Per square meter takes about 300 flowers. Since Cut begonias can not long rest in the open air, all the preparatory operations have to be done very quickly. Flowers are cut in one day, packed in big boxes and delivered to the Grand Place, where the same day fit into the carpet. All these works are invited to a huge number of volunteers.

Last year, an area rug made of 1,800 square meters. The theme was chosen Africa. In the present rug patterns tribes of Ethiopia, Congo, Nigeria, Botswana and Cameroon. Carpet Design is preparing for a couple of years. The fact is that you must select color patterns and raise the right amount of relevant begonias.

Why Africa? The organizers would like to draw attention to this region, full of interesting places, unusual tribes, their traditions.

Since carpet is one significant problem – how to watch the whole thing? Walking around the perimeter provides an incomplete picture. At certain times you can climb to the Town Hall. Fortunately, managed to stay until dark. Unfortunately, the building on the right hand side of the square (a relative of the frame) are in restoration, so I did not do a full panorama of the area.

Flower carpet – that’s not all. Every night at 22:00, 22:30 and 23:00 showed “light show”, and opening night was also a “fireworks” …

Light show by African music was strange …

As for the fireworks at the opening, it was terrible. It all started with a Bengal fire, very caustic and very bright:

A grassroots minute fireworks managed to burn the audience clothes, backpacks and singe the hair. Of course, if he will take off from the back and right over his head …

Well, a lot of smoke, after which nothing was visible.

If you suddenly find yourself in Belgium in late August of next year, to call in to see the carpet is worth. But the opening ceremony can be safely skipped.

Well, a little about the procedure for creating a carpet. As I said, cut begonias are delivered in large boxes (for some reason from bananas) on the Grand Place in the same day. On the square is already a marked substrate (like cellophane) to which volunteers are beginning to lay flowers. The whole process takes about 6 hours. The flowers do not dry out too fast, they are periodically watered.

Volunteers and reporters at today’s all.
