Carey Mulligan (born 28 May 1985) is an English actress. She made her acting debut in the 2004 Kevin Elyot play Forty Winks in London. Her film debut was the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, playing the part of Kitty Bennet. She has had roles in several British television programmes such as Doctor Who, Bleak House, and Northanger Abbey. In 2008, she made her Broadway debut in the revival of Chekhov’s The Seagull to critical acclaim.
In 2009, Mulligan gained widespread recognition for her performance as Jenny in An Education, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, and for which she won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She has gone on to star in Far from the Madding Crowd, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Great Gatsby and Never Let Me Go.
Carey Mulligan first major appearance was playing Kitty Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (2005) alongside Keira Knightley, Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland. Carey also played orphan “Ada Clare” in the B.B.C. television series, Bleak House (2005).
Carey Mulligan has said that her passion and love for acting was first kindled at her old school Woldingham School, where she took part in a school production of “Sweet Charity” in her final year, and where she was also a student head of drama.
