Unknown artist – dubbed Bulgarian Banksy by some news agencies – transformed figures of Soviet soldiers at the base of the Soviet Army monument into superheroes and cartoon characters, including Superman, Captain America, Robin, the Joker, Santa Claus, and Ronald McDonald. The Soviet flag was painted over as America’s star-spangled banner and the phrase “in step with the times” was spray-painted below in Bulgarian.
The transformation of Soviet soldiers into fantasy characters and in that way the combination of modern US culture and Soviet history is what some may missed in the original Banksy’s latest artworks.
What’s your take on this, dear readers? Are these classic American icons the new heroes of Eastern Europe? Is this Banksy of Bulgaria suggesting that one imperialist ally has been replaced with another, but in friendlier clothing? And what of the Russian soldiers who died alongside Bulgarians in the nation’s fight against Nazi Germany? Discuss amongst yourselves — but show your work.
