“Queen of Double Eyes” – Toronto-based artist Alex Garant paints stunningly surreal portraits of people who appear in double and triple vision.
Alex Garant mixes traditional portrait painting style with a double-vision technique that reminds us of double exposure photography. The results are these surreal optical illusions that when looked at for a long period of time can even make you dizzy.
After looking at Alex Garant’s oil paintings, portraits swirling with extra eyes and lips, we’re actually a little nauseated. The paintings are beautifully executed but give the viewer a feeling that they’re drunk or disoriented.
Alex Garant uses patterns, duplication of elements, symmetry and image superposition as key elements of her imagery. Alex Garant’s paintings are not far from a perfect optical illusion: her protagonists trying to escape themselves, almost possessed by a distinct version of their own individuality, an exorcism of the soul.
The viewers shall try to unearth the main figure by focusing on making those multiples into one. Alex Garant’s paintings are certainly conversation pieces as they are meant to engage the observers into an image investigation process and hopefully enlist their senses differently while doing so.
