Ozzie the goose gets new 3D printed prosthetic leg, Johannesburg, South Africa – 22 Apr 2015
Ozzie the goose has a new spring in his step after being fitted with a 3D printed prosthetic leg. Ozzie, who lives with animal lover Sue Burger in Johannesburg, South Africa, had to have his leg amputated after he broke it shortly after hatching. At first Ozzie tried to adapt to the loss of his leg by using his left wing like a crutch, but this was incredibly tough on his body and he even broke the tip of his wing. Seeing how much he was struggling, rather than have Ozzie put down Sue made a radio appeal asking if anyone could help. A number of companies stepped forward to help – offering everything from design skills to materials and the required 3D printers. Following their hard work Ozzie was fitted with his new prosthetic leg at the beginning of April. According to Sue, the sudden reappearance of his leg has caused Ozzie some confusion and he now requires physical therapy. However, he is already using and putting weight on the new leg.
